I really enjoyed the work of designer Nicholas Blechman. His “Empire” work comments on the nature of war, more specifically the war in the Middle East. He jokes about themes of “terrorism” and “evil” in this body of work and brings back memories of preschool with his Speak and Say poster that substitutes words like “apple” and “book” for friendly looking images coupled with words like “Anthrax” and “Evil Doer.” I was especially fond of his poster “The Real Empires of Evil” which appear to display flags from many different countries which are actually symbols of “evil,” or one could even say, “dangers,” right here living with you and me. Take the flag for he calls "Finland," it displays a simple shark fin while the flag for Executive Salaria, which sounds more like a disease, depicts a line graph showing massive growth.
